31 Days of Dreadtober(2017): Never Hike Alone, A Love Letter To Friday The 13th

Day 14

Its been almost 8 years since the 2009 remake of Friday the 13th. The franchise has been left to collect dust as Paramount has abandoned their efforts to reboot the franchise. For fans of the series, hope arrived earlier this year in the form of an indie video game, aka Friday the 13th The Video Game. The game has performed admirably and if anything, its success proves there is still a hunger for the series.
Yesterday, a brand new fan film dropped on Youtube from Womp Stomp Films. Directed by Vincente DiSanti, the movie is a 50-minute love letter to the franchise. The film smartly takes into account the impact technology and the internet have had on the world since the 80s. Rather than harping on nostalgia, the “short” film approaches the franchise from a fresh perspective and contemporary sensibility. The short is described as follows:

A fan tribute to Friday the 13th, Never Hike Alone follows an adventure blogger, Kyle McLeod (Andrew Leighty), who uncovers the long lost remains of Camp Crystal Lake while on a solo backpacking trip. Ignoring the campfire tales from his childhood, Kyle’s search turns deadly when he makes the grave mistake of crossing the path of Camp Blood’s legendary mass murderer, Jason Voorhees. Stranded in the forest with Jason on his heels, Kyle must push his survival skills to their limits if he hopes to survive the night. Otherwise, he’ll wind up as another lost victim of the cursed camp.

Though filtered through a modern lens, longtime fans will find plenty to enjoy, especially with a cameo at the end from a long time fan favorite character. Check out the short and show some love to Womp Stomp Films on their Youtube channel.
