Jurassic World 2, Alita: Battle Angel, And Ready Player One Trailer Round-Up

This last week a couple of pretty big trailers dropped on the net and we review the biggest ones in this trailer roundup.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

While Jurassic World was not a giant leap forward for the Jurassic franchise, I can’t deny that I found Colin Trevorrow‘s revival immensely entertaining despite its rough edges and it’s inherent CGI fueled goofiness. There were certain plot threads that remained unspooled by the film’s end and was excited by what they foreshadowed. In my head, I had already imagined a World War Z type of apocalypse movie as mankind continued to weaponize dinosaurs(World War D!) and reaped the consequences of their sins. Because of the plot threads that were teased, I expected a certain kind of story, but it looks like they aren’t going to be following through on those.
All in all, I found this trailer decidedly “meh”. We’re going back to the island to save the dinosaurs from an angry volcano. Many of the themes and even iconography have already been done to death in the previous films. In fact, the plot and even a few of the shots we see in this trailer are strangely similar to the second movie in the franchise, The Lost World: Jurassic Park. It seems like the filmmakers are trying to call an audible on the original sequel which I find disappointing.  While The Lost World is not as good as the original, there were a lot of things to like in that movie. The fact that we’re going back to the island concept is also bizarre to me from a character standpoint. You would think by now people would have figured to stay away from these islands, but seems like no one will ever learn their lesson as long as there is money to be made.

Alita: Battle Angel

Conversely, the Battle Angel trailer took me by pleasant surprise. Long has this movie been in the works, the progeny of a joining with some of my favorite filmmakers. Robert Rodriguez is directing with James Cameron on board as producer. This trailer came out of nowhere and really wowed me. The uncanny valley is strong with this one. The CGI seems to be high quality and while I originally found Alita’s large anime style eyes very disconcerting, I think that was the intent. Alita is supposed to be an aberration of sorts within this dystopian, cyberpunk world which is why all her cyborg foes will look decidedly different.
Having no previous experience with the original manga or the anime features, the trailer made me curious about the original source material. You can find one of the anime features on Youtube right now(its about 50 mins long). I really enjoyed it so if you’re curious you can always give it a watch. After seeing it my excitement for this version has doubled so I guess the trailer did its job.

Ready Player One trailer 2

The second trailer for Stephen Spielberg’s highly anticipated adaptation of the novel with the same name. The reveal trailer was much more focused on presenting visually interesting pieces while this one actually gave some plot details. I was thankful for that as I’ve never read the novel. I was in with the first trailer, but now that I’m aware of the stakes, I find myself more intrigued about how this world actually came to be.
